It's PUMPKIN time!!!

Every year the children and I take a 20 minute drive south to Jefferson and purchase pumpkins. We pull our favorites off the pile, load them in the wagons, drag the wagons across the parking lot, pay for our pumpkins, drag them BACK across the parking lot and load them in the trunk of the car.

This year, we had two wagons and a wheelbarrow... fondly labeled "Pumpkin Barrow". Why do I make this drive to the Pumpkin Pile instead of going to the grocery store?

Economics.

Pumpkins at the grocery store are 18 cents per pound. Some of you are probably saying, "I wish I could get my pumpkins that cheaply!!!" On average, the pumpkins we purchase are a lot bigger than 1 pound. (We bought 13 pumpkins this year...) The rule at our house is that you have to be able to carry your own pumpkin across the parking lot (since that's usually the distance from the car to the carving location...). Margaret ALWAYS chooses a small one. Savannah ALWAYS chooses a large one that she ends up grumbling about because it gets heavier the farther she carries it...

LeGrand chose his pumpkin based on how heavy it was, Caroline is too small for a pumpkin.

Pumpkins at the Pumpkin Pile are $1.00 EACH. The big ones. The little ones. The medium sized ones. All $1.00 each. If figure that I average out to what I would pay for one big one at the grocery store.

And then... the pumpkins turn into Jack-O-Lanterns. I'll post those photos after we're done. These are destined to be carved this weekend. And if ALL of them get carved and there's not one left for pie, it's only $1.00 (plus fuel) to get another. I think I can handle that...

Great memories for the kids, an important reason for all the work. Those are some of the nicest looking pumpkins I have ever seen. Looking forward to the carved results.

I would love to get the pumpkins for 1.00 We spend tons more than that and rarely - or never get a large one!

There is a church here that sells pumpkins...they were asking $18 for decent sized ones! I took one look at the price and took the kids and went away. I was so annoyed! Thankfully we found them at a local grocery store for $1...looks like your kids had a blast...I can't believe how grown up they're getting!

Pumpkins in NYC are NOT $1. Oh, I wish they were. It was great to see you guys, even if briefly, while we were in Oregon. Have a Happy Halloween!!!
